The airline industry was hugely impacted by the tragedy of 9/11 when two 7-47 jets crashed into both of the twin towers by terrorist, killing thousands of people. These weren’t the only two planes and targets. The pentagon was also hit. There was also an attempt to hit the White House but the passengers resisted and were able to crash the jet into a Pennsylvania field. Obviously a lot of people were scared to fly and it cost the airlines billions because because people wouldn’t fly. There were also security changes that were made on and off the planes. The tragedy effected the flying experience and process in a lot of different ways.
The safest air traffic control system in the world actually belongs to the United States. The FAA runs the air traffic control system and constantly work to make it a better system to make it safer and easier to operate. The air traffic control systems are constantly upgrading the technology to deal with the multiply air traffic that will probably occur in the future. Most of the time the air traffic controllers don’t even see the aircraft they guide. They use satellite, radar, and digital information to guide aircraft when they come into range of the controllers. Controllers also base plans they make off of weather, military operations, and how many aircraft will be flying in the airspace. The air traffic control system is getting better with its complex systems and technology. It is a great and improving system.
The economic result of 9/11 was a very devastating hit. It was not as bad as it was expected to be. But because of this expectation the oil prices rose while stocks fell. The third quarter was horrible and it was thought by some that 9/11 forced us into a bad recession but the fourth quarter got better and it was discovered that the third quarter for the past quarters haven’t been that productive either. 9/11 economically damaging because of the property destruction. The biggest reason was that people didn’t fly for a period of time and some people still don’t because of fear and the groundings of air craft. Air ports also had to make a lot of security changes to prevent another tragedy. It is obvious that the airline industry is a big industry and the effects of the tragedy practically stopped the flow of money in the industry. This in turn destroys the economy.
The oil companies also knew that there would be issue in the Middle East. Issues and conflicts would make it harder to get oil. When the oil companies had and excuse or reason to raise oil prices and make more money they did. The oil prices eventually went down again, and it was a few years later that they went back up with the same excuse or reason.
The terrorist attack did not only effect the United States air travel, but it also effected air travel on the international level. All of the airports around the world were forced to improve their security requirements. They have been using new screening equipment to see what someone may be carrying aboard an aircraft easier and better than ever before. There have been some issues with people not liking the processes. They will search your bag and use and x-ray on it. They will also make you take apart electronics such as laptops or cameras apart to make sure it is not any type of explosive. They will then make you put it back together. Next you are run through a metal detector and an x-ray machine. It is a very long process that takes hours. Before 9/11 it was a very short process and it was easier to get on your flight.
They had thought that the process had scared off non-immigrant travelers. The rate of incoming non-immigrants dipped down on 9/11 but was almost as high as it was previously in 2007. People still argue against the process but have decided that they need to fly because they don’t want to drive and it also saves businesses time, which is money. People have learned to deal with the system and are still flying like they did previously to the tragedy of 9/11.
There is a long list of items that are restricted on flights. They are very careful of what you bring on the flights. For example, if you have gel shoe inserts they must be checked to make sure that they are not a gel explosive. Even snow-globes need to be checked. Fire arms are allowed if they are checked and in a hard locked case. Surprisingly you are actually allowed to have a lighter.
They have even hired sky marshals which are like undercover flight cops with a gun. It just goes to show that you never know what might happen on a flight or at the airport because of terrorist like the 9/11 terrorist.
